Things to Do

You can spend a month or more with us and do something different each day. The following is a list of activities available to you within a driving distance of 30 minutes.

Golf - There are 19 fine golf courses open to the public within a 30 minute drive of The RV Hideaway. Add 15 minutes to that time and you can add another 10 courses to the portfolio.

Fishing, Shrimping & Boating - Water, water everywhere. Creeks, bays, bayous, rivers, canals and the Gulf of Mexico are here for your pleasure. You may bring your own boat. We have plenty of storage space at no charge. There are boat rentals and charter fleets available if you don’t want to fool with bringing your own.

White Sandy Beaches - The prettiest white sand beaches you have ever seen will be only 25 minutes away. We have 25 miles of beachfront waiting for your enjoyment. There are many points of public access, the most used being the ones owned by the City of Gulf Shores and the Alabama State Park.

Food - Man, do we have it! We have got to be in the center of the finest food restaurants in the country. Fresh seafood, of course, is our specialty. Places like Jesse’s, only a mile down the road, specializing in New Orleans Cuisine, the Fish House, the Original Oyster Bar in Gulf Shores and Mobile. The list goes on and on until you have difficulty deciding whether you want Chinese, Japanese, Western Barbecue, Mama Lou’s home cooking or a franchised food.  LuLu’s Grill, operated by Jimmy Buffet’s sister, on the Intracoastal Canal in Gulf Shores is another great place to have an outdoor lunch on a nice day.

Shopping - We have one of the largest outlet malls in the United States down the road a piece, only about 6 miles. It’s known as the Tanger Factory Outlets. It houses more than 120 stores. We also have a Walmart Super Store, a Home Depot, Lowe’s, Ace Hardware and several supermarket stores. You can spend all the money you have, plus some, any rainy day.

Bird Watchers & Nature Lovers - Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge is both permanent and temporary home for endangered species and migratory birds. Over 4,000 acres of beach dunes, scrub dunes, fresh water marsh, salt water marsh, and Maritime forest make up the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge. This coastal Refuge provides refuge for the endangered loggerhead sea turtle, the endangered American alligator, and the rare gopher tortoise. It is part of the migration route of the monarch butterfly, and is also known for its more than 120 species of birds - making it a paradise for bird watchers. Along with birding, the refuge offers opportunities for hiking, swimming, photography, collecting sea shells, and boating. Fishermen enjoy both fresh and saltwater fishing.

Weeks Bay wetlands are a magnet for tourists. It is a small estuarine embayment off Mobile Bay comprised of approximately three square miles of open shallow water, averaging 4.5 feet deep. Forested wetlands form an extensive strip between floodplain swamps and upland forests. Weeks Bay is a critical nursery for fish, crustaceans, and shellfish.  An interesting morning or afternoon can be spent visiting the estuary display center and strolling the Boardwalk through the wetlands.

History Buffs - We have real history. This is where the Spanish explorers hacked their way through dense oak under growth to build the first trails across our coastal plains. This is where the Indians massacred the whites and the whites massacred the Indians. This is where we built forts to protect our shorelines. This is where we have enshrined the battleship Alabama, a submarine, airplanes and an LST. This is where you can make a short excursion to the National Naval Aviation Museum at Pensacola Naval Station.
